Our children are influenced by many things in the world around them. Television, their friends, teachers, the school they attend, parents, other siblings and other relatives are just a few influences that I can think of that can have a profound effect on the lives of our children. We can't always control what they see and hear. Some things are positive and line up with our value system and some are negative and reflect the world.
But I have a vivid memory of seeing our boys following their Father around. They tried to talk like him and even walk like him. They were patterning his behavior - words and actions. I believe that we, the parents, are the strongest influence over our children! They not only listen to what we say, but they do as we do. Our boys are young adults now and still have many influences on their lives. But I rest in this verse: Proverbs 22:6 "Start children on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." My husband and I continue to pray that the Lord will guide our boys' lives.
This morning I was reading 1 Kings 11:12. Solomon's son, Rehoboam, was trying to become King. Although his Father was a man who received God's wisdom and every earthly treasure, he went from living a life that was pleasing to the Lord, to a life filled with worshipping idols from other gods. As a result of his decay, the son became a carbon copy of his parent. Rehoboam's reign was filled with civil war and division among the people. So this just reinforces the importance of continuing to align our lives with the Word of God, live moral lives, and keep our marriages strong because the work of our children is never over.
God Bless you and your family in the New Year!
